About Cayuga Lake Seido Karate

Cayuga Lake Seido Karate was founded in January, 2006, as a recreation program with a small group of dedicated students. We have since grown to include a full program for adults and children at our beautiful dojo in the town of Lansing. With more than 125 students actively training, our dojo provides a richly diverse environment in which students can develop their own strengths.

Students come together to participate in several annual events hosted by Cayuga Lake Seido: a Punch-and-Kick-a-Thon fundraiser, a trip to World Seido Karate headquarters in New York City, Lake Training, and our holiday party. Many students also take the opportunity to participate in Gasshuku (special training), the annual Benefit Tournament, and other events sponsored by the World Seido Karate Organization.

Our dojo is committed to providing a place where individuals and families can not only train together, but can come together to support each other and support their community. Since 2006, we have raised and donated over $67,000 for several local organizations including the Lansing Parent Teacher Student Organization, Lansing Lunchbox, the Tompkins County SPCA, The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, the Corporate Development Committee of the Lansing Central School District, Hospicare and Palliative Care Services of Tompkins County, the Women's Opportunity Center, the Trumansburg Food Pantry, and the Lansing Food Pantry.

You are warmly invited to visit our dojo and learn more about what Cayuga Lake Seido Karate can do for you and your family. We are looking forward to you becoming a part of our growing family.

The Seido Philosophy

  • The meaning of Cayuga Lake Seido Karate, Lansing, NY's Logo

The Seido emblem is the five-petaled blossom of the Japanese plum tree, which is also the Nakamura family’s emblem.

Kaicho founded Seido on three fundamental principles: respect, love, and obedience. These are represented by the three circles within the center of the plum blossom of the Seido emblem.

  • Respect

    • meaning of respect in Cayuga Lake Seido Karate, Lansing, NY
    • If we truly have respect for others, it is inevitable that we treat them with courtesy and equanimity. Karate helps us see ourselves clearly. It offers a means of building the principle of respect into a cornerstone of our lives.
  • Love

    • meaning of respect in Cayuga Lake Seido Karate, Lansing, NY
    • Love grows out of respect. Love, founded on a genuine compassion for others, is something that we should train ourselves to extend freely. When we love freely, we can give and share everything. We need hold on to nothing. Our hands can be empty. Karate means “empty hand.”
  • Obedience

    • meaning of respect in Cayuga Lake Seido Karate, Lansing, NY
    • Obedience goes with commitment. Students of Seido karate make a commitment to train as hard as they can to develop mind, body and spirit into harmony and balance. The highest obedience is to the moral and spiritual principles of our conscience.

Ben M., Youth 2nd Degree Black Belt

  • "After the encouragement of my kids and the Sensei's, I joined CLSK in my late forties. I learned that Seido is a Karate for everyone. I expected the physical conditioning and self defense, but what I continue to gain is so much more.
